She Asked the Doctor Twice if It Was the Right Medicine. It Was Methanol.

Six months pregnant, a Liaoning woman doing a routine glucose test drank the liquid a doctor handed her, having checked twice. The bottle was a cell preservative laced with methanol. She is in hospital; the health commission has stepped in.

At a hospital in Liaoyang, Liaoning, a woman surnamed Zhu, roughly six months pregnant, came in on August 7 for a standard oral glucose tolerance test. The drill is simple and millions of Chinese women do it: drink a measured cup of glucose solution, sit, have blood drawn. Zhu had never done one before. When the attending doctor, a physician surnamed Gao, told her to take a medicine bottle from a cardboard box on the desk herself, she worried she might have picked the wrong one. She asked. He said it was the right one — twice, she says.

The liquid was not glucose. It was Xinshiboshi cell preservation fluid, a laboratory reagent containing methanol, and swallowing even a little is toxic. The bottle's label said as much. The liquid itself was the giveaway Zhu could taste: glucose is sweet; this was not. When she ran back to the consulting room, the doctor admitted the mistake, saying, "It was my carelessness" (是我马虎了). The case, reported via a question trending on Zhihu, has the health commission of Liaoyang involved and Zhu still under observation, worried about the fetus.

The details that have made this more than a private medical error are the two checkpoints that failed. The glucose and the preservative were stored together in the same box; a patient was asked to fish out her own dose; and her two explicit questions were waved off by the person who should have been the final check. It is a single point of failure stacked on a single point of failure, each one routine and reassuring in isolation, lethal in combination.

Chinese social media has been here before — the hospital that became a story not for what medicine cost but for what a careless hand put in a cup. What keeps the discussion going is Zhu's repeated, documented asking. The system failed, but the patient did everything a patient is told to do. The open question left by the case is not whether a methanol-laced reagent can kill — it is how many near-misses never make it onto a list of "which information is worth noticing." Zhu's baby is still at risk; the blood tests and monitoring will say more about whether she got lucky.
