Robots Will Climb Mount Tai's Real Stone Steps in China's First 'Robot Mountain-Climbing Games'

China's state broadcaster CMG will hold the first World Robot Mount Tai Climbing Competition on October 29, sending robots up the sacred mountain's real stone path — about 3.8 kilometers and more than 3,100 steps from Red Gate to Midway Gate to Heaven. Organizers are billing the UNESCO-listed peak as an 'ultimate testing ground' for embodied AI: uneven stairs, mist and crowds that no lab can replicate.

The race

Announced at a press conference in Tai'an, Shandong, on September 10, the first CMG World Robot Mount Tai Climbing Competition will send robots up the mountain's actual tourist path on October 29 — not a replica, but the worn stone steps pilgrims have climbed for three thousand years. The course runs from Red Gate (Hongmen) to Midway Gate to Heaven (Zhongtianmen): roughly 3.8 kilometers and more than 3,100 stone steps of uneven height and steady gradient, according to the rules briefing carried by CCTV News.

The framing is deliberate. Organizers call Mount Tai's terrain a "natural ultimate testing ground" for embodied intelligence — the discipline of putting AI into bodies that must perceive, decide and act in physical space. A robot that can walk stairs does one thing; a robot that can handle Mount Tai's uneven, crowded steps must generalize, and that, CCTV's announcement argued, is what real application scenarios offer that laboratory floors never will.

Why a mountain full of stairs

China's humanoid-robot sector is in a lavish hardware moment: machines that run, backflip and march through factory pilots emerge from Chinese labs every quarter. What the field lacks is the thing Mount Tai offers free — unscripted difficulty. Steps whose heights vary by centimeters punish stiff gaits; polished stone punishes overconfident foot placement; tourists and weather punish everything else. The competition tests perception, decision-making, operation, environmental adaptation and reliable running — the full stack, in public, on China's most symbolically loaded mountain.

The symbolism is doing quiet work too. Mount Tai is where emperors once performed the sacrifices that legitimized their rule, and climbing it remains a national rite of passage. State media's phrasing — "stone steps as the track, the sea of clouds as the grandstand" — is selling exactly that fusion of pilgrimage and product demonstration.

What to watch

October 29 is the date. Watch which teams emerge from registration, whether any robot completes the full Red Gate-to-Zhongtianmen ascent cleanly, and what the industry does with the results. If a robot gets up the mountain, expect the footage — and the claims about embodied AI readiness that ride on it — to travel far beyond China.
