U.S. Opts Out of Fourth UN Universal Periodic Review, Citing Politicization and Bias.
The United States announced on August 28 that it will not take part in the fourth round of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a process slated to begin on November 6. It is the first time the country—one of the world’s most powerful states and a permanent member of the UN Security Council—has refused to sit at the table of a mechanism it has previously embraced in 2010, 2015 and 2020.
