China's Homegrown Memory Champion Puts Fifth-Generation DRAM Into Mass Production

CXMT announced at the World Manufacturing Convention that its fifth-generation DRAM platform is in mass production, with 11.95nm half-pitch claimed — a challenge to the Samsung–SK Hynix–Micron trio at the heart of a global memory price squeeze that has already raised phone prices in China.

ChangXin Memory Technologies, the Hefei-based chipmaker known as CXMT, announced on Saturday that its fifth-generation DRAM technology platform has entered mass production — a milestone that places its process within reach of the world's most advanced memory fabs.

The announcement was made at the World Manufacturing Convention in Anhui, where the company said an innovative four-rexposure lithography technique has shrunk the active-area half-pitch of the memory array to 11.95 nanometres — "approaching the world's most advanced memory production platforms," in the company's own words. The platform also lifts die output per wafer by more than 50% over the previous generation, while improving density, power draw and cost control. Alongside the platform, CXMT showed off large-capacity LPDDR5X chips built on it — the class of memory that phones and AI servers consume by the metric ton.

Why this matters beyond the chip floor: DRAM prices have been climbing worldwide, a squeeze that began as Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron shifted capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI servers and away from conventional DRAM. The shortage fed straight into consumer prices — Huawei, Xiaomi and Honor all raised phone prices last month as memory costs bit, and Xiaomi's chief executive publicly blamed "expensive memory" when pricing its new foldable. A fifth Chinese entrant at the cutting edge revises the picture of who can set the terms in a market three companies have dominated for decades. It is the latest step in an industrial push that has DeepSeek ordering 160,000 domestic AI chips in a $2.56 billion order that made headlines last month.

The venue was no accident either. The World Manufacturing Convention is the same stage where, days earlier, the top leadership directive on manufacturing topped the news agenda — the state's message that industrial technology is the country's foundation, now with a concrete exhibit to point at.

Baidu's trending board carried the launch as "fifth-generation technology platform in mass production," and Caixin reported that the platform improves storage density, power and cost control together. On Weibo, a popular post put the milestone in plain terms: the half-pitch of 11.95 nanometres "has reached the world's advanced level."

There is a stock-market footnote that explains the attention: CXMT's parent listed on the Shanghai STAR Market in July and promptly became the exchange's largest company by market value — and in June, Reuters reported a supply deal worth over 20 billion yuan with Tencent for server DRAM. The commercial stakes of the G5 platform are correspondingly large.

One caution worth carrying in the article's pocket: "mass production" of a technology platform and shipping in volume at yield are different milestones, and Chinese chip announcements have blurred that line before. The test will come in the market, in phones and servers, where CXMT's LPDDR5X will compete directly with the Korean and American incumbents on price and yield.
